Emergency Sanitation Management Training Course
Introduction
The Emergency Sanitation Management Training Course is a comprehensive professional development program designed to equip humanitarian professionals, WASH specialists, environmental health officers, engineers, public health practitioners, emergency responders, government officials, and development practitioners with the knowledge, technical expertise, and practical skills required to plan, implement, coordinate, monitor, and manage sanitation services during humanitarian emergencies and disaster response operations. The course focuses on emergency sanitation systems, excreta management, wastewater management, solid waste management, environmental sanitation, infection prevention and control (IPC), hygiene promotion, sanitation infrastructure, public health protection, humanitarian coordination, monitoring and evaluation, disaster risk reduction, and sustainable recovery. Participants will strengthen their ability to establish safe, effective, and sustainable sanitation systems that reduce disease transmission, protect public health, preserve environmental quality, and enhance the dignity and well-being of crisis-affected populations.
Humanitarian emergencies caused by floods, earthquakes, armed conflicts, disease outbreaks, droughts, forced displacement, and climate-related disasters frequently disrupt sanitation infrastructure and expose communities to increased risks of communicable diseases, environmental contamination, and public health emergencies. This course provides practical knowledge on rapid sanitation needs assessments, emergency latrine construction, fecal sludge management, wastewater treatment, solid waste disposal, drainage management, vector control, sanitation facility operation and maintenance, infection prevention measures, emergency logistics, community participation, environmental monitoring, and sanitation recovery planning. Through practical workshops, simulation exercises, technical demonstrations, field-based assessments, and real-world case studies, participants develop competencies to establish emergency sanitation systems that comply with international humanitarian standards and effectively support emergency response operations.
The training integrates internationally recognized humanitarian and public health frameworks including the Sphere Humanitarian Standards, Core Humanitarian Standard (CHS), World Health Organization (WHO) Environmental Health Guidelines, WASH Cluster Coordination Guidelines, Sustainable Development Goal 6 (Clean Water and Sanitation), Accountability to Affected Populations (AAP), humanitarian programme cycle, environmental health management, infection prevention and control (IPC), disaster risk reduction, monitoring and evaluation systems, humanitarian logistics, and organizational resilience frameworks. Participants strengthen their ability to coordinate sanitation interventions with governments, humanitarian organizations, United Nations agencies, public health institutions, engineering teams, environmental authorities, community leaders, and development partners while ensuring effective sanitation service delivery and long-term resilience.
Upon successful completion of this course, participants will possess practical skills to conduct sanitation assessments, design emergency sanitation systems, manage waste and wastewater, coordinate sanitation services, monitor sanitation performance, implement infection prevention measures, strengthen community engagement, and develop comprehensive emergency sanitation preparedness and response plans. The course combines expert facilitation, practical workshops, collaborative learning, simulation exercises, technical demonstrations, field assessments, operational planning, organizational assessments, and action-oriented case studies to ensure participants acquire competencies applicable across humanitarian organizations, ministries of health, water and sanitation authorities, disaster management agencies, United Nations agencies, donor-funded programs, civil society organizations, and international development institutions.
