Refugee Protection Training Course

Course Overview

The Refugee Protection Training Course is designed to equip humanitarian professionals, government officials, refugee protection officers, development practitioners, emergency responders, and civil society organizations with the knowledge, practical skills, and strategic competencies required to protect the rights, dignity, safety, and well-being of refugees, asylum seekers, stateless persons, and other forcibly displaced populations. Growing displacement caused by armed conflict, political instability, persecution, climate change, disasters, and humanitarian emergencies requires effective and rights-based refugee protection systems that promote inclusion, resilience, and durable solutions. This course provides comprehensive training in Refugee Protection, international refugee law, asylum procedures, forced displacement management, protection mainstreaming, humanitarian protection, refugee status determination, protection case management, Accountability to Affected Populations (AAP), community-based protection, human rights, durable solutions, humanitarian coordination, and inclusive humanitarian programming to strengthen protection responses for displaced populations.

Participants will develop practical competencies in refugee protection risk assessments, registration and documentation, refugee status determination principles, protection monitoring, vulnerability assessments, safeguarding, referral pathways, community engagement, child protection, gender-responsive protection programming, Geographic Information Systems (GIS), Artificial Intelligence (AI), digital refugee information management systems, mobile data collection, biometric registration concepts, humanitarian information management, monitoring and evaluation, protection analysis, and evidence-based humanitarian planning. Through practical exercises, simulation scenarios, and real-world case studies, participants will strengthen their ability to develop coordinated refugee protection interventions that ensure legal protection, access to essential services, social inclusion, community participation, and sustainable solutions while maintaining confidentiality, accountability, and ethical humanitarian practice.

The course also explores international legal and humanitarian frameworks, including the 1951 Convention Relating to the Status of Refugees, the 1967 Protocol Relating to the Status of Refugees, the 1969 OAU Convention Governing the Specific Aspects of Refugee Problems in Africa, the Global Compact on Refugees, Sphere Humanitarian Standards, Core Humanitarian Standard (CHS), international human rights law, international humanitarian law, safeguarding, Protection from Sexual Exploitation and Abuse (PSEA), disability inclusion, child protection, localization, organizational governance, donor compliance, monitoring and evaluation, institutional strengthening, and ethical leadership. Participants will strengthen their understanding of integrated refugee protection systems that promote protection, self-reliance, resilience, inclusion, and long-term recovery.

Upon successful completion of the course, participants will be able to conduct refugee protection assessments, strengthen protection monitoring systems, establish referral mechanisms, improve refugee information management, integrate protection mainstreaming across humanitarian sectors, apply digital technologies to refugee protection, enhance humanitarian coordination, strengthen accountability and community participation, and develop comprehensive Refugee Protection strategies that improve humanitarian effectiveness, legal protection, and durable solutions for displaced populations.
