Realist Evaluation Techniques Training Course

Course Overview

The Realist Evaluation Techniques Training Course is a comprehensive professional development program designed to equip participants with advanced knowledge and practical skills in conducting theory-driven evaluations that explain what works, for whom, under what circumstances, and why. Realist evaluation has become an increasingly important approach in monitoring and evaluation, particularly in complex development interventions where traditional evaluation methods may fail to explain variations in program performance and outcomes. Governments, donor agencies, non-governmental organizations, humanitarian agencies, research institutions, and development practitioners are increasingly adopting realist evaluation techniques to understand the mechanisms that drive change and improve the effectiveness of policies, programs, and interventions.

Realist evaluation is founded on the principle that development interventions do not work uniformly across all contexts and populations. Instead, outcomes emerge from interactions between program mechanisms and contextual conditions. By applying Context-Mechanism-Outcome (CMO) configurations, realist evaluation enables organizations to generate evidence about how interventions produce results, identify factors influencing success or failure, and develop adaptive strategies for scaling and improving programs. The methodology supports evidence-based planning, strategic decision-making, organizational learning, and adaptive management in complex and dynamic development environments.

This training adopts a highly practical and participatory learning methodology that combines expert presentations, practical exercises, case studies, simulations, group discussions, field applications, and hands-on assignments. Participants will gain competencies in developing program theories, designing realist evaluation frameworks, constructing Context-Mechanism-Outcome configurations, collecting and analyzing mixed-method data, conducting theory testing and refinement, and communicating findings to stakeholders. The course integrates systems thinking, complexity science, participatory approaches, and utilization-focused evaluation practices to ensure practical application across multiple sectors and development contexts.

Upon successful completion of this training, participants will possess the competencies required to design and implement rigorous realist evaluations that generate actionable evidence for policy and program improvement. Participants will be capable of understanding the causal pathways of complex interventions, facilitating organizational learning processes, strengthening monitoring and evaluation systems, and supporting adaptive management and innovation. The course prepares professionals to become competent evaluators capable of conducting sophisticated evaluations that improve development effectiveness and sustainable outcomes.
