Refugee Camp Mapping and Planning Training Course

Refugee Camp Mapping and Planning is a comprehensive training program designed to equip participants with advanced knowledge and practical skills in the planning, design, management, monitoring, and spatial analysis of refugee settlements and humanitarian camps using Geographic Information Systems (GIS), Remote Sensing, GPS technologies, drone mapping, and geospatial planning tools. The increasing number of displaced populations caused by conflicts, natural disasters, climate change, and humanitarian crises has created a growing demand for efficient refugee camp planning and management systems. Effective camp planning requires accurate spatial information, demographic analysis, infrastructure mapping, environmental assessment, and resource allocation strategies to ensure the safety, dignity, and well-being of displaced populations. This course provides participants with practical expertise in refugee camp mapping, site planning, service delivery analysis, infrastructure management, and humanitarian spatial planning.

The course introduces participants to modern refugee camp mapping methodologies that integrate GIS platforms, satellite imagery, mobile data collection systems, web GIS applications, population databases, environmental monitoring tools, and humanitarian information management systems. Participants will learn how to collect, process, analyze, visualize, and manage spatial data to support camp establishment, shelter planning, infrastructure development, health service delivery, water and sanitation management, security planning, and emergency preparedness. Through practical exercises and real-world case studies, participants will gain hands-on experience in camp layout design, population mapping, service accessibility analysis, vulnerability assessment, and humanitarian logistics planning.

Organizations involved in refugee protection, humanitarian response, disaster management, development cooperation, public health, camp coordination, and community resilience increasingly rely on geospatial technologies to improve camp management and operational efficiency. This course develops participants’ competencies in refugee settlement planning, camp infrastructure mapping, humanitarian GIS applications, demographic analysis, environmental impact assessment, and decision-support systems. Participants will explore how emerging technologies such as Artificial Intelligence (AI), cloud GIS, mobile mapping applications, drones, big data analytics, and smart humanitarian systems are transforming refugee camp planning and humanitarian operations.

By combining theoretical foundations with practical applications, this training empowers participants to design and implement refugee camp mapping and planning systems that support effective humanitarian assistance, sustainable settlement management, risk reduction, and resilience building. Participants will acquire the skills required to develop camp geodatabases, conduct spatial assessments, generate operational maps, create monitoring dashboards, and support evidence-based humanitarian decision-making. Upon successful completion, participants will be able to apply advanced geospatial technologies to improve camp planning, service delivery, resource allocation, and protection outcomes for displaced populations.
