GIS for Urban and Regional Planning Training Course

Geographic Information Systems (GIS) for Urban and Regional Planning is a comprehensive training program designed to equip participants with advanced knowledge and practical skills in applying geospatial technologies to support sustainable urban development, regional planning, infrastructure management, land administration, transportation planning, environmental management, and smart city initiatives. As urban populations continue to grow and cities face increasing challenges related to housing, transportation, environmental sustainability, climate resilience, and service delivery, GIS has become an essential tool for planners and decision-makers. This course provides participants with the expertise needed to collect, manage, analyze, visualize, and interpret spatial data for evidence-based urban and regional planning processes.

The course introduces participants to modern GIS applications in urban and regional planning using satellite imagery, GPS technologies, Remote Sensing, spatial databases, demographic information systems, land use datasets, and smart city platforms. Participants will learn how to analyze urban growth patterns, assess infrastructure needs, map land use and land cover changes, evaluate transportation networks, identify development opportunities, and support policy formulation. Through practical exercises and case studies, participants will gain hands-on experience in spatial planning, urban analytics, suitability modeling, infrastructure mapping, and geospatial decision support systems.

Organizations involved in urban planning, regional development, infrastructure management, local governance, environmental management, transportation, housing, and economic development increasingly rely on GIS technologies to improve planning efficiency and support sustainable growth. This course develops participants’ competencies in spatial analysis, urban modeling, demographic analysis, land suitability assessment, environmental planning, and smart city development. Participants will explore how GIS and geospatial intelligence can enhance urban governance, optimize resource allocation, improve service delivery, and strengthen resilience against environmental and socioeconomic challenges.

By combining theoretical foundations with practical applications, this training empowers participants to design and implement GIS-based urban and regional planning solutions that support sustainable development goals and national development agendas. Participants will acquire the skills required to create comprehensive planning databases, perform urban growth analysis, develop thematic maps, conduct spatial assessments, and generate planning reports that support informed decision-making. Upon successful completion, participants will be able to apply GIS technologies effectively in urban and regional planning projects, contributing to resilient, inclusive, and sustainable communities.
