Introduction

The Environment and Social Safeguards in Development Projects Course equips professionals with practical knowledge and technical expertise to address the complex challenges of environmental protection, social inclusion, gender equality, grievance redress, and sustainable development. With global organizations such as the World Bank, African Development Bank, IFAD, and UNDP prioritizing safeguards, this training ensures that specialists are fully prepared to integrate social safeguards, environmental safeguards, grievance redress mechanisms, and gender mainstreaming into project planning and implementation.

Participants will gain a comprehensive understanding of how to apply land rights frameworks, digitization of land rights systems, e-waste management strategies, climate resilience, environmental and social impact assessments (ESIA), and resettlement planning in development projects. Emphasis will be placed on strengthening compliance with international safeguard policies, IFC Performance Standards, and World Bank Environmental and Social Framework (ESF).

The course is specifically designed for Social Safeguard Specialists, Environmental Safeguard Specialists, Gender Specialists, and Grievance Redressal Specialists. It combines theory and practical applications with case studies on land acquisition, digital land information systems, waste management, stakeholder engagement, and community development. Participants will also explore how to set up safeguard monitoring frameworks, grievance redress mechanisms, and digital reporting tools to strengthen accountability and transparency in development projects.

By the end of this training, participants will be able to prepare and implement Environmental and Social Management Plans (ESMPs), Resettlement Action Plans (RAPs), Gender Action Plans (GAPs), E-Waste Management Strategies, and Land Digitization Programs, ensuring compliance with donor requirements while promoting equity, sustainability, and climate-smart development.
