WASH Program Management Training Course

Course Overview

The WASH Program Management Training Course is a comprehensive professional development program designed to strengthen the capacity of government institutions, humanitarian organizations, United Nations agencies, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), development partners, water utilities, public health institutions, disaster management agencies, community-based organizations, and private sector stakeholders in planning, implementing, monitoring, and evaluating Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) programs in humanitarian and development settings. The course equips participants with advanced knowledge and practical skills in WASH program planning, integrated water resource management, sanitation systems, hygiene promotion, emergency WASH response, public health protection, climate-resilient WASH infrastructure, Monitoring, Evaluation, Accountability and Learning (MEAL), project management, Geographic Information Systems (GIS), digital data collection, WASH information management systems, environmental health, risk management, donor compliance, and evidence-based decision-making. Participants develop practical competencies to design sustainable WASH interventions that improve public health, reduce waterborne diseases, strengthen community resilience, and enhance humanitarian response.

Water scarcity, poor sanitation, inadequate hygiene practices, rapid urbanization, climate change, population displacement, disease outbreaks, and humanitarian emergencies continue to threaten public health and sustainable development worldwide. Effective WASH program management requires strategic planning, multisectoral coordination, community engagement, engineering solutions, behavior change communication, environmental protection, and strong governance systems. This course introduces internationally recognized frameworks and standards including the Sphere Humanitarian Standards, Core Humanitarian Standard (CHS), Sustainable Development Goal 6 (SDG 6), World Health Organization (WHO) Water Safety Plans, UNICEF WASH programming approaches, Results-Based Management (RBM), Integrated Water Resource Management (IWRM), Community-Led Total Sanitation (CLTS), humanitarian WASH cluster coordination mechanisms, climate adaptation strategies, and environmental sustainability principles. Participants learn practical approaches for delivering inclusive, resilient, and sustainable WASH programs that improve health outcomes and strengthen institutional capacity.

Throughout the course, participants gain practical experience in WASH needs assessments, water supply system design, sanitation planning, hygiene promotion, water quality monitoring, emergency WASH interventions, GIS mapping, digital monitoring systems, project budgeting, procurement, donor reporting, infrastructure management, environmental risk assessment, and operational planning. Practical exercises, field simulations, collaborative projects, engineering demonstrations, group discussions, and real-world humanitarian case studies strengthen participants' analytical, technical, leadership, coordination, communication, and problem-solving skills while promoting transparency, accountability, innovation, digital transformation, gender equality, disability inclusion, environmental stewardship, and organizational learning. The course also emphasizes climate resilience, community ownership, safeguarding, and sustainable service delivery.

Upon successful completion of this course, participants will possess the strategic, technical, and managerial competencies required to design, implement, monitor, and continuously improve WASH programs that strengthen public health, improve access to safe water and sanitation services, enhance hygiene practices, reduce disease outbreaks, support humanitarian recovery, promote environmental sustainability, and contribute to resilient communities and sustainable development. Organizations will benefit from improved WASH service delivery, enhanced operational efficiency, stronger donor confidence, better coordination, measurable public health outcomes, and sustainable institutional performance.
