Smart Refugee Camps Training Course

Course Overview

The Smart Refugee Camps Training Course is designed to equip humanitarian professionals, refugee camp managers, government officials, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), United Nations agencies, development practitioners, engineers, planners, emergency response teams, and humanitarian coordinators with the knowledge and practical skills required to design, manage, and operate technology-enabled, sustainable, resilient, and people-centered refugee camps. With increasing displacement caused by armed conflict, climate change, disasters, political instability, and economic crises, humanitarian organizations are adopting innovative approaches that integrate digital technologies, renewable energy, smart infrastructure, data-driven decision-making, and community participation to improve service delivery and quality of life in refugee settlements. This course provides comprehensive knowledge of smart camp planning, humanitarian innovation, digital transformation, environmental sustainability, infrastructure management, camp coordination, protection, and resilience while aligning with international humanitarian standards, the Sphere Standards, and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Participants will develop practical competencies in smart camp planning, digital registration systems, biometric identity management, Geographic Information Systems (GIS), remote sensing, Internet of Things (IoT), renewable energy systems, smart water and sanitation management, shelter planning, waste management, health information systems, education technologies, camp security, logistics optimization, supply chain management, monitoring and evaluation, knowledge management, and community engagement. The training emphasizes integrating smart technologies into camp coordination and camp management (CCCM), disaster risk reduction, environmental sustainability, climate adaptation, public health, food security, livelihoods, protection, and humanitarian logistics. Through practical simulations, smart technology demonstrations, digital mapping exercises, collaborative workshops, innovation laboratories, and real-world humanitarian case studies, participants will gain practical skills for designing and managing efficient, safe, inclusive, and resilient refugee camps.

The course further explores emerging topics including artificial intelligence for humanitarian operations, drone technology, blockchain-enabled humanitarian assistance, predictive analytics, digital cash assistance, mobile service delivery, cybersecurity, digital governance, smart transportation systems, environmental monitoring, climate-smart infrastructure, localization, organizational resilience, humanitarian innovation management, community-based digital participation, and future humanitarian technologies. Participants will learn practical methods for strengthening operational efficiency, improving beneficiary services, optimizing resource utilization, reducing environmental impacts, enhancing coordination, promoting accountability, and supporting evidence-based humanitarian decision-making. Special emphasis is placed on ensuring that technological innovation remains ethical, inclusive, secure, culturally appropriate, and responsive to the needs of refugees and host communities.

Upon successful completion of the course, participants will possess the expertise to design, implement, monitor, and improve smart refugee camp systems that strengthen humanitarian operations, improve protection outcomes, enhance service delivery, support environmental sustainability, and increase resilience among displaced populations. Organizations will benefit from improved operational efficiency, enhanced coordination, stronger data management, better infrastructure planning, increased community participation, greater donor confidence, improved humanitarian accountability, sustainable camp management systems, and innovative approaches that improve the wellbeing and dignity of refugees.
