Course Overview

The Staff Safety in Emergencies Training Course is designed to equip humanitarian professionals, emergency responders, field coordinators, project managers, security officers, health workers, logistics personnel, government officials, NGO staff, UN agency personnel, and development practitioners with the knowledge, practical skills, and competencies required to protect personnel and maintain safe operations during humanitarian emergencies. Humanitarian workers increasingly operate in environments affected by armed conflict, natural disasters, disease outbreaks, civil unrest, terrorism, technological hazards, climate-related emergencies, and complex humanitarian crises. Ensuring staff safety in emergencies is essential for maintaining humanitarian access, protecting lives, sustaining operations, fulfilling duty of care obligations, and achieving humanitarian objectives. This course provides comprehensive training in staff safety, emergency preparedness, humanitarian security management, risk assessment, incident management, crisis communication, business continuity planning, occupational health and safety, Monitoring, Evaluation, Accountability and Learning (MEAL), Artificial Intelligence (AI), Geographic Information Systems (GIS), digital emergency information systems, Accountability to Affected Populations (AAP), organizational resilience, and emergency response coordination to strengthen operational safety, preparedness, resilience, and humanitarian effectiveness.

Participants will develop practical competencies in personal security awareness, emergency risk assessments, movement planning, travel security, field mission preparation, security incident reporting, evacuation planning, emergency communication systems, first response procedures, stress management, staff welfare, safeguarding, duty of care implementation, digital incident reporting using KoboToolbox and ODK, Geographic Information Systems (GIS), Artificial Intelligence applications for predictive risk monitoring, Microsoft Excel safety tracking, Power BI dashboards, emergency response coordination, organizational learning, and continuous safety improvement. Through practical exercises, emergency simulations, field-based scenarios, tabletop exercises, and real-world humanitarian case studies, participants will strengthen their ability to identify threats, respond effectively to emergencies, minimize operational disruptions, protect personnel, and maintain safe humanitarian operations.

The course also explores internationally recognized humanitarian safety and security frameworks, including the United Nations Security Management System (UNSMS), Saving Lives Together (SLT) framework, Core Humanitarian Standard (CHS), Sphere Humanitarian Standards, ISO 31000 Risk Management, ISO 45001 Occupational Health and Safety Management Systems, Inter-Agency Standing Committee (IASC) Guidelines, Results-Based Management (RBM), Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), humanitarian principles, Protection from Sexual Exploitation and Abuse (PSEA), safeguarding, localization, disability inclusion, gender-sensitive security approaches, ethical leadership, organizational governance, digital transformation, innovation, institutional strengthening, and continuous organizational learning. Participants will strengthen their understanding of integrated staff safety systems that improve accountability, operational resilience, organizational sustainability, donor confidence, and humanitarian performance.
