Emergency Water Supply Systems Training Course

Introduction

The Emergency Water Supply Systems Training Course is a comprehensive professional development program designed to equip water engineers, WASH specialists, humanitarian professionals, emergency responders, public health practitioners, government officials, utility managers, and development practitioners with the knowledge, technical expertise, and practical skills required to design, install, operate, maintain, and manage emergency water supply systems during humanitarian crises and disaster response operations. The course focuses on emergency water sourcing, water treatment technologies, water distribution systems, water quality monitoring, groundwater development, emergency pumping systems, water storage solutions, humanitarian logistics, infrastructure rehabilitation, public health protection, monitoring and evaluation, disaster risk reduction, and sustainable recovery. Participants will strengthen their ability to deliver safe, reliable, and equitable emergency water services that reduce waterborne diseases, protect public health, and improve the resilience of crisis-affected communities.

Humanitarian emergencies resulting from floods, droughts, earthquakes, armed conflicts, disease outbreaks, forced displacement, and climate-related disasters frequently disrupt access to safe drinking water and essential water infrastructure. Rapid restoration of water supply systems is critical to preventing disease outbreaks, maintaining sanitation standards, supporting healthcare facilities, and protecting livelihoods. This course provides practical knowledge on emergency water needs assessments, groundwater exploration, borehole rehabilitation, water abstraction, emergency pumping systems, water treatment and disinfection, storage tank installation, pipeline rehabilitation, water trucking operations, distribution network management, emergency maintenance, and operational risk management. Through practical workshops, field demonstrations, simulation exercises, technical design sessions, and real-world case studies, participants develop competencies to establish effective emergency water systems that meet international humanitarian standards and community needs.

The training integrates internationally recognized humanitarian and technical frameworks including the Sphere Humanitarian Standards, Core Humanitarian Standard (CHS), World Health Organization (WHO) Guidelines for Drinking-water Quality, WASH Cluster Coordination Guidelines, Sustainable Development Goal 6 (Clean Water and Sanitation), Accountability to Affected Populations (AAP), humanitarian programme cycle, disaster risk reduction, environmental management, water safety planning, monitoring and evaluation systems, humanitarian logistics, and organizational resilience frameworks. Participants strengthen their ability to coordinate emergency water supply interventions with governments, humanitarian organizations, United Nations agencies, water utilities, engineering teams, public health institutions, community leaders, and development partners while ensuring sustainable service delivery and operational efficiency.
