Gender Based Violence (GBV) in Emergencies Training Course

Introduction

The Gender Based Violence (GBV) in Emergencies Training Course is a comprehensive professional development program designed to equip humanitarian professionals, emergency responders, government officials, healthcare providers, social workers, protection officers, and development practitioners with the knowledge, technical expertise, and practical skills required to prevent, mitigate, and respond to Gender Based Violence (GBV) during humanitarian emergencies. The course focuses on GBV risk mitigation, survivor-centered approaches, protection mainstreaming, safeguarding, prevention of sexual exploitation and abuse (PSEA), case management, psychosocial support, referral systems, legal and ethical frameworks, humanitarian coordination, accountability to affected populations, monitoring and evaluation, and community engagement. Participants will strengthen their competencies in integrating GBV prevention and response into humanitarian programming while ensuring the safety, dignity, confidentiality, and rights of survivors.

Armed conflicts, natural disasters, disease outbreaks, forced displacement, climate-related emergencies, and other humanitarian crises significantly increase the risk of Gender Based Violence, particularly for women, girls, children, older persons, and individuals with disabilities. This course provides practical knowledge on GBV risk assessments, humanitarian protection principles, survivor-centered case management, health and psychosocial support services, legal referral pathways, safe programming, child protection linkages, disability inclusion, humanitarian information management, ethical data collection, community awareness strategies, and multi-sector coordination. Through practical exercises, scenario-based simulations, and real-world case studies, participants develop the capacity to design and implement comprehensive GBV prevention and response programs that strengthen protection outcomes and community resilience.

The training integrates internationally recognized humanitarian frameworks and standards including the Inter-Agency Standing Committee (IASC) Guidelines for Integrating Gender-Based Violence Interventions in Humanitarian Action, Sphere Humanitarian Standards, Core Humanitarian Standard (CHS), Minimum Standards for Gender-Based Violence in Emergencies Programming, Accountability to Affected Populations (AAP), Prevention of Sexual Exploitation and Abuse (PSEA) principles, Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW), humanitarian programme cycle, safeguarding frameworks, monitoring and evaluation systems, protection information management, and disaster risk reduction strategies. Participants will strengthen their ability to coordinate with governments, United Nations agencies, humanitarian organizations, healthcare providers, law enforcement agencies, and community-based organizations to ensure effective GBV prevention, response, and survivor support.

Upon successful completion of this course, participants will possess practical skills to assess GBV risks, establish survivor-centered referral pathways, strengthen protection systems, coordinate multi-sector GBV interventions, monitor program effectiveness, enhance organizational safeguarding, and develop evidence-based GBV prevention strategies. The course combines expert facilitation, practical workshops, simulation exercises, collaborative learning, field-based case studies, organizational assessments, and action planning to ensure participants acquire competencies applicable across humanitarian organizations, government institutions, United Nations agencies, donor-funded programs, healthcare systems, civil society organizations, and disaster management agencies.
