Course Introduction:

The Trauma Support and Counselling course is designed to provide participants with the necessary knowledge and skills to effectively support and counsel individuals who have experienced trauma. Trauma can have a significant impact on individuals' mental, emotional, and physical well-being, and it requires specialized approaches to help them heal and recover. This course will explore various theoretical frameworks, evidence-based practices, and therapeutic interventions that are essential in trauma support and counseling. Participants will gain a comprehensive understanding of trauma, its effects, assessment techniques, and a range of interventions to facilitate healing and resilience.

Course Objectives:

 By the end of the Trauma Support and Counselling course, participants will be able to:

  1. Define trauma, identify different types and causes, and understand its impact on individuals.
  2. Conduct trauma assessments, recognize symptoms and signs of trauma, and differentiate it from other mental health conditions.
  3. Apply theoretical frameworks and models in trauma support and counseling.
  4. Utilize trauma-informed approaches to establish safety, trust, and ethical considerations in the therapeutic relationship.
  5. Implement evidence-based interventions and therapeutic techniques for trauma healing.
  6. Incorporate narrative and expressive therapies in trauma support.
  7. Tailor trauma support interventions to meet the specific needs of children, adolescents, survivors of domestic violence, sexual assault, and military veterans.
  8. Recognize and manage secondary traumatic stress in trauma counselors, practicing self-care, and seeking appropriate supervision and consultation.
  9. Promote trauma-informed systems and advocate for trauma survivors.

Week 1: Introduction to Trauma

  • Defining trauma and understanding its impact
  • Different types and causes of trauma
  • Importance of trauma-informed care in support and counseling

Week 2: Trauma Assessment and Diagnosis

  • Methods and tools for trauma assessment
  • Recognizing symptoms and signs of trauma
  • Differential diagnosis: distinguishing trauma from other mental health conditions

Week 3: Theoretical Frameworks in Trauma Support and Counseling

  • Overview of different theoretical frameworks (e.g., post-traumatic stress disorder, complex trauma)
  • Biopsychosocial model of trauma
  • Influence of culture and diversity on trauma response and healing

Week 4: Trauma-Informed Approaches to Counseling

  • Principles of trauma-informed care
  • Establishing safety and trust in the therapeutic relationship
  • Ethical considerations in trauma counseling

Week 5: Evidence-Based Interventions for Trauma

  • Cognitive-behavioral therapies for trauma
  • Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR)
  • Somatic approaches in trauma healing

Week 6: Narrative and Expressive Therapies

  • Narrative therapy for trauma healing
  • Art therapy, music therapy, and other expressive modalities
  • Incorporating mindfulness and meditation techniques

Week 7: Trauma Support for Specific Populations

  • Trauma in children and adolescents
  • Trauma in survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault
  • Trauma in military veterans and first responders

Week 8: Secondary Traumatic Stress and Self-Care

  • Recognizing and managing secondary traumatic stress
  • Strategies for self-care and preventing burnout
  • Supervision and consultation in trauma support work

Week 9: Cultural Competence and Trauma

  • Cultural factors in trauma response and healing
  • Providing culturally sensitive trauma support
  • Addressing cultural barriers in access to care

Week 10: Trauma-Informed Systems and Advocacy

  • Trauma-informed organizational practices
  • Advocacy for trauma survivors
  • Collaborating with community resources and support networks


General Notes

  • All our courses can be Tailor-made to participants' needs
  • The participant must be conversant in English
  • Presentations are well-guided, practical exercises, web-based tutorials, and group work. Our facilitators are experts with more than 10 years of experience.
  • Upon completion of training the participant will be issued with a Foscore development center certificate (FDC-K)
  • Training will be done at the Foscore development center (FDC-K) centers. We also offer inhouse and online training on the client schedule
  • Course duration is flexible and the contents can be modified to fit any number of days.
  • The course fee for onsite training includes facilitation training materials, 2 coffee breaks, a buffet lunch, and a Certificate of successful completion of Training. Participants will be responsible for their own travel expenses and arrangements, airport transfers, visa application dinners, health/accident insurance, and other personal expenses.
