Course Introduction

The GIS Mapping and Spatial Data Analysis Course is a comprehensive training designed to build practical skills in the use of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) for mapping, spatial analysis, and informed decision-making. With the increasing demand for geospatial technologies in sectors like urban planning, environmental management, infrastructure development, and public health, this course provides professionals with hands-on experience using modern GIS tools like QGIS and ODK. Participants will learn how to collect, manage, visualize, and interpret spatial data in real-world applications.

Geographic Information Systems (GIS) are powerful tools used in project beneficiary mapping, infrastructure development, land use planning, impact analysis, and utilities management. Through GIS mapping and data visualization, organizations can better manage resources, monitor projects, and deliver data-driven solutions. This course emphasizes practical GIS applications in developing nations with relevant global case studies, including carbon credit tracking and renewable energy regulation benchmarking from developed countries.

With GIS playing a vital role in monitoring climate change, disaster preparedness, and development planning, this training equips learners with the ability to perform advanced spatial data analysis, create interactive web maps, and apply GIS in sectors like agriculture, health, governance, and environmental conservation. Participants will explore spatial reference systems, conduct buffer and point-in-polygon analyses, and develop project-ready geospatial outputs.

Designed for professionals, researchers, and decision-makers, this five-day hands-on GIS training course offers practical tools to manage geospatial data, design accurate maps, and draw insights through spatial analytics. By the end of the course, learners will be equipped to implement full GIS workflows — from mobile data collection to advanced spatial visualization — with real-world examples.

Course Objectives

Upon successful completion, participants will be able to:

  1. Understand core concepts of GIS and spatial data infrastructure.
  2. Perform spatial data analysis including heatmaps, density maps, and buffer analysis.
  3. Acquire, clean, and integrate GIS data from satellite, remote sensing, and open sources.
  4. Visualize spatial data and produce professional-quality maps using QGIS.
  5. Use ODK for mobile-based data collection integrated with GIS.
  6. Work with vector and raster data including shapefiles and satellite imagery.
  7. Conduct geocoding, spatial joins, and attribute table operations.
  8. Create and publish interactive web maps using modern web mapping tools.
  9. Apply GIS in emerging sectors such as carbon credit tracking and renewable energy regulation.
  10. Execute a full GIS project including acquisition, analysis, interpretation, and visualization of spatial data.

Organizational Benefits

Organizations participating in this training will gain:

  1. Enhanced capacity in evidence-based planning using spatial data.
  2. Improved project tracking through GIS-based monitoring systems.
  3. Accurate beneficiary and resource mapping for targeted interventions.
  4. Integration of mobile data collection (ODK) with geospatial platforms.
  5. Cost-effective mapping and analysis using open-source software (QGIS).
  6. Better communication through professional map visualizations.
  7. Enhanced policy-making with spatial impact assessment tools.
  8. Adaptation of best practices in renewable energy governance from developed countries.
  9. Access to up-to-date geospatial tools for carbon credit and environmental tracking.
  10. Increased efficiency in land use, market analysis, and service delivery planning.
